Florida Georgia Line and Nelly.

None of these things make sense at first.

All of them make sense afterwards.

I’ve run hundreds of experiments in my tech career.

99.99% of the time we are shocked by the results. 

My team once purposely slowed down an app and made screens load slower.

We slowed it down by 3 seconds.

Millennials and Gen Z (aka Zoomers) don’t have time for a 3 second wait.

Teams get fired in tech for things like this.

Guess what happened?

The slower the app loaded, the more customers clicked “Buy Now”.

Making the app slower made us millions of more dollars in revenue, per day!

Mind = Blown

You are going to have a lot of assumptions when starting your business.

The faster you can test your biggest assumptions, the faster you’ll be able to know why you’re right or wrong.

But here is what’s most important.

Knowing whether you’re right or wrong isn’t what’s important. 

Knowing why you’re right or wrong is most important. 

Knowing the why allows you to understand your customers.

This is where the superpowers live.

I said slowing the app down resulted in more “Buy Now” clicks. 

Why?

We didn’t know why so we interviewed our customers. 

In summary, customers told us “they thought the app was doing complicated math in the background to get them the best possible price”.

So what did we do as a result of knowing this?

We added fake “loading”  animations to make it “seem” like the app was doing something smart. 

Go to Expedia, Booking.com, or Kayak.

They all do exactly this with their fancy “loading” animations.
